Cube Forges Strategic Partnership with Built Environment Competence Specialist
Construction management consultancy, Cube, welcomes a new strategic partner and industry stalwart to the team to build best practice into every element of construction.
Construction experts Nicola Slater and Mark Johnston, FCIOB, NECReg from construction management consultancy firm Cube, have joined forces with built environment specialist Peter Dawber to expand their offer to clients and provide even greater value when building competency into construction projects.
Before retiring early in May 2017, just a month before the tragic fire at Grenfell, Peter was a Senior Academic and Dean of the School of Architecture, Design & the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University.
A Chartered Building Engineer and Fellow of the Chartered Association Building Engineers (CABE), plus a former Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Peter now works as an independent consultant providing advice, validation and support to professional bodies, trade organisations, education providers and large and small commercial organisations within the built environment.
Since Grenfell, Peter has spent the last eight years supporting the development and recognition of industry competence across a range of roles within the built environment. A member of various competency steering groups including the PAS suite of competence frameworks, the British Standards Institution’s ‘Competence in the Built Environment’ committee and, having served on the Building Safety Regulator’s Interim Industry Competence Committee, he now sits on the Industry Competence Committee (ICC) which supports the Building Safety Regulator on matters of competence.
Teaming up with Cube means the trio can work in partnership, combining their individual expertise to offer specific building safety and construction management services to more companies in the construction sector. This includes project gap analysis, identifying and implementing practical solutions for improving processes and competence, delivering Building Safety Act training, plus providing specialist safety regulation advice.
Co-founder and construction consultant at Cube, Mark Johnston commented: “We have been working with Peter for several years, most recently on the SLG 9 Industry Competence Steering Group around construction management delivery. It is a great opportunity to create alliances and associations with someone of Pete’s expertise, who is a well-known and respected name in the industry. He is keen to hear the voice of industry and feed that into the regulatory frameworks to make positive change.”
On the partnership, Peter Dawber added: “I’m very pleased to be working in a more formal capacity with Cube. Having worked on a range of initiatives in recent years we’ve developed a healthy, trustful and mutual respect both individually and corporately. Although I enjoy my solo work, it is ineffective if not informed by the experiences, challenges and best practice from those engaged at the ‘coal face’. Working more closely with Cube and the organisations they engage with will underpin my knowledge, keep me better informed, so in return I can help support these organisations by sharing my experiences from an extensive career in the built environment.”
By working collaboratively, the partnership aims to deliver informed and insightful solutions for organisations navigating the obligations and responsibilities under the Building Safety Act on local, regional and national scale. Through working with Cube’s clients, Peter develops a deeper understanding of progress in industry competence which complements his roles with the BSI and the ICC, which supports the Building Safety Regulator. By having Peter on board, Cube can peer review working solutions to ensure it is offering best practice solutions to clients and their construction projects.
Nicola Slater, fellow co-founder and construction consultant at Cube, added: “We’re already collaborating and sharing ideas on the challenges around industry competence and working on providing training on the Building Safety Act to those in designer and contractor roles. We’re excited to welcome Peter to the extended team and look forward to how we can collectively make a positive difference in the construction industry.”
Cube supports regional and tier 1 contractors to protect margins, complete significant projects on time, reduce client frustrations and mitigate project risk. Cube has delivered training in construction management and the Building Safety Act to more than 1,000 construction professionals and continues to support teams to implement competence into their construction processes.
