Cube Construction Consultant, Mark Johnston, FCIOB, NEC Reg, has been appointed as the new Chair of the Nottingham Hub of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Midlands & Eastern Region, taking over the role from Julia Allen MCIOB after two years in post.
A Chartered CIOB member since 1999, Mark has been involved in the local hub committee as Vice Chair since 2024, helping draw from the Hub’s depth of knowledge and experience to promote the CIOBs strengths and benefits to its members and beyond.
Kicking off his tenure as Chair at the annual Member’s Forum in London reflecting on achievements and successes of the regions and discussing solutions for future challenges, Mark gave the opening presentation to colleagues from throughout the construction industry.
Co-founder and construction management consultant at Cube, Mark Johnston commented: “I’ve enjoyed taking an active role as Vice Chair of the Nottingham CIOB hub and am really looking forward to stepping up as Chair. It’s great to have the opportunity to be actively involved in providing leadership and direction to stakeholders across the construction industry, particular during this time of major change and against a challenging economic backdrop.
“Through Cube’s work with construction firms of all sizes up and down the country, helping support them with demonstrating capability, competence and compliance we are in a privileged position to gather feedback and insights we can feed back into the CIOB and shape the future of our industry. This enables us to support individuals and companies to realise their potential through the application of best practice.”
Mark has more than 30 years’ experience in the construction industry since studying at Sheffield Hallam University and Nottingham Trent University. He has worked for companies in multiple sectors, including Kier Northern, Mowlem’s, Wilson Bowden, Mansell Construction and Balfour Beatty, with roles spanning Site Engineer to Senior Project Manager. As Operations Manager of a national fit out contractor in the major projects division he was responsible for implementing a formal process for and changing the culture of project delivery.
In 2019, Mark and co-founder, Nicola Slater, established Cube Construction Consultants. Cube became a CIOB Chartered Consultancy in 2022 and then successfully transitioned to CIOB Company membership as a Chartered Construction Management Consultancy.

Cube works in partnership with the CIOB Academy to provide training on the requirements and legal duties related to the Building Safety Act, legislation that affects everyone in the built environment and construction industry.
Mark Johnston FCIOB, NECReg took up the role of Chair of the CIOB Nottingham Hub from July 2026 for a two-year term, supported by Vice Chair Kirsty Green of Laminar Projects.
